Once upon a time, way way back in the early 2000s, Spirited Away came out in cinemas all across the world. In Estonia as well as in Finland. This marks the time Estonian media realised anime is a thing. While many of us, still aren't sure what the heck anime is exactly, in 2015 one BA Student from Tallinn University decided to do a research on how and what Estonian media writes about Japanese pop culture and if we have evolved beyond only knowing about Miyazaki and his anime. In 2016, I finished my research, which covers everything from the very start of the 21st century to the end of 2015 and shows how the scope of themes has gotten a lot broader. Now I am a Master's student of communication and media.

Estonians here like to think we and Finns very much alike in ways, so,perhaps this too will interest some fans of Japanese pop culture from Finland.

If you don't know anything about Estonian media landscape - don't worry - that will be briefly covered that too.
