This program has two parts: a presentation and a workshop. The first part is a presentation on what to consider when borrowing languages for a fictional environment. It will take about 45 minutes including discussion. After a brief break we'll dive into Ideas for ((un)real) speech for the reminder of the time. If you want to come for just one or the other program that is perfectly ok. I do recommend not being terribly late for the second part.

I will provide a pragmatic approach to adding multiple languages to a fictional world without actually designing a single one. I am going to give a background on how I approached this when designing my own RPG world. I will continue by talking about factors -- especially historical and on-going oppression and colonialisation, but also other related real-world social factors as well as practical factors -- that we should consider when borrowing languages for RPG worlds or fiction in general. There will be time for discussion, which may happen during the presentation.

The break will be 5-10 minutes long.

In the second part, I'll first give a short introduction and then you get to construct stories in small groups. I will provide you with speech and language based seeds for the stories, and will be available to answer questions if any arise during the story construction. The session will end with sharing of what we came up with and supportive feedback from me.

Innehållsvarningar: Esitys käsittelee suoraan kolonialismia ja syrjintää sekä sivuaa sotaa ja väkivaltaa.
