Ever wondered how heavy a bastard sword is? Is it hard to write about your ranger or knight character actually fighting someone? Do you struggle planning out swordplay scenes? Then, dear writer or GM, this seminar is for you! In this workshop we'll pick up weapons and find out what it really feels like to hit a target with a sword, how to use your body in a fight with or without weapons, how to read an opponent, what constitutes skill with a sword - and of course have enormous fun with pointy objects! This is a physical class, so wear comfortable exercise clothes, and expect to sweat a little. Indoor shoes, with thin soles if possible, are recommended. Absolutely no physical requirements, everyone is welcome regardless of age, fitness, size, experience or disability. We want to teach you how to fight, which you can then use in your writing. If you're under 18 years old, please bring an adult. We can switch between English and Finnish as needed.
Knightly swordplay for writers and GMs

Hall 5 Battle- and action hall, β (45Β min)
Minimum attendance: 4
Content warnings: Touching others - but you can opt out. Wearing a fencing mask can feel restricting. Discussion of body size and shape may trigger body anxiety, although we genuinely think that all bodies deserve a chance to learn to fence if they so choose - besides, body size is never a downside in combat!
Other accessibility information: The baseline is - everyone can take part and we can make accommodations. There will be pair practice, and waving 1,3 kg metal sword around, but nothing (except masks for pair practice) is compulsory and nothing "spoils" the experience for other people. We can substitute a wooden sword or a broomstick for people who can't manage a metal one. This would be a challenging workshop if you are severely vision impaired, but it's still possible to participate to the extent you wish and to which it's safe. If you are hearing impaired, please ensure you are able to understand safety guidance (e.g., sign language interpretation).
