Kainuu, the Northeastern region located on the "waist" of Finland has a rich and vivid ghost story culture. Some of the tales have their origins in the fact that Kainuu is located on the Eastern border and has been a battleground for centuries. The horrors of the real world have been transferred into oral history in the form of ghost stories. But typically for Eastern Finland, horror stories often contain humor as well.
