Grinder on jo BattleTechin perussäännöt osaaville (esimerkiksi erillisenä ohjelmana olleen demopelin pelanneelle), mutta taktista taitoa ei vielä vaadita. Tässä pelissä jokaisella on vain yksi jättiläisrobotti, ja kun tuhoudut, saat isomman tilalle! Peliin voi liittyä ja siitä voi lähteä joka vuoron alussa. Grinder is meant for players who already know the rules (for example having played the introductory games offered as separate program), but tactical experience is not needed. In this game everyone fights with just one giant robot, and when you get destroyed, you get a bigger one! You can join and leave the game at the beginning of each turn. Enrollment is for the first turn, after that you can join in as soon as there is space. There are miniatures to play with, but if you want to bring your own, you can check the CGL Grinder Small list for possible randomized choices.
