Ever wondered how heavy a bastard sword is? Is it hard to plan swordfights or write about your ranger or knight character actually fencing? Do you struggle with making swordplay scenes come alive? Wonder no longer! In this workshop we'll pick up weapons and find out what it really feels like to hit a target with a sword, how to use your body in a fight with or without weapons, how to read an opponent, what constitutes skill with a sword - and of course have enormous fun with pointy objects! This is a physical class, so wear comfortable exercise clothes, and expect to sweat a little. Indoor shoes, with thin soles if possible, are recommended. Absolutely no physical requirements, everyone is welcome regardless of age, fitness, size, experience or disability. We want to teach you how to fight, which you can then use in your writing. If you're under 18 years old, please bring an adult. We can switch between English and Finnish as needed.

Sign-up for this workshop is at the Experience Point.

Maximum attendance: 12
Other accessibility information: This would be a challenging workshop if you are severely vision impaired, but it's still possible to participate to the extent you wish and to which it's safe. If you are hearing impaired, please ensure you are able to understand at least the safety guidance word for word (e.g., sign language interpretation).
Content warnings: Touching others - can opt out. Wearing a fencing mask. Discussion of body size and shape may trigger body anxiety, although we genuinely think that all bodies deserve a chance to learn to fence if they so choose, and that body size is never a downside in combat.
