Cutting through myths and pirate stereotypes, this presentation delving into laws, skills, and everyday life of pirates and pirate hunters in the ‘Golden Age’ of piracy in the Caribbean at the turn of the eighteenth century. Who turned to piracy and why, what was their community like, and what was extraordinary about all this? Why does it matter what a ship’s draught or rigging is or whether your captain wears a wig? What did pirates joke about or how did they solve disputes? Presented by a bona fide historian, docent Hanna Järvinen.
