Viisi vuotta on kulunut Hobitin tapahtumista. Sankarimme löytävät itsensä Erämaasta, tai kuten sitä sindariksi kutsutaan Rhovanionista, alueelta, joka sijaitsee Sumuvuorilta itään ja Gondorista pohjoiseen.
Lohikäärme Smaug on saanut surmansa Jousimies Bardin, jotan nykyään Laakson kuningas Bardiksi kutsutaan, käsissä. Toivo paremmasta huomisesta on alkanut viriämään Erämaan asukkaiden keskuudessa: kauppareitejä uudelleenavataan ja Rhovanionin vapaat kansat ovat taas alkaneet tutustua toisiinsa.
Kuningas Bard on lähettänyt avoimen kutsun vapaiden kansojen seikkailunhakuisille edustajille saapua auttamaan häntä Viiden Armeijan Taistelun jälkimaininkien rauhoittamisessa. Seikkailijamme löytävät itsensä Synkmetsän läntiseltä laidalta matkallaan vastaamaan tähän kutsuun.

Five years have passed since the events of The Hobbit. We find ourselves in Wilderland, or Rhovanion, the region of Middle-earth east of the Misty Mountains and north of Gondor.
The dragon Smaug is dead, slain by Bard the Bowman, now King Bard of Dale. People all across Wilderland are finding new hope for the future. Trade routes are reopening, and the free folk of Wilderland are beginning to get to know one another again.
King Bard has sent out an open invitation to all the adventurous folk amongst the free people to help him take care of the remnants left behind after the Battle of the Five Armies. Our adventurers find themselves on the western edge of the Mirkwood on their way to answer this invitation.
